VISIT THE SALT MARSHES
Visit the Salt Marshes...
Over the centuries in Southern Brittany, man and the ocean have shaped the Guérande peninsula into the most northerly salt marshes in Europe. >From Guérande in the south to Assérac in the north, they stretch for over 2,000 hectares of clay soil across 9 communes, forming a real “marine meadow”.
For centuries, salt workers have been the heirs to and guardians of a unique heritage. A salt worker is a magician: he takes a drop of water and extracts a grain of salt. The job of a salt worker is one of the few agricultural professions to use a technique that does not involve mechanisation or the addition of chemicals. This traditional production technique is used to produce quality salt and preserve an outstanding environment.
